Northern Patagonia is one of Chile's last true frontiers — a remote region of glaciers, marble caves, turquoise rivers, and vast protected lands shaped by conservation visionaries. Traveling along the legendary Carretera Austral from Balmaceda to Parque Patagonia reveals a landscape of dramatic contrasts: jagged peaks, ancient forests, glacial lakes, and open valleys stretching toward infinity. This is Patagonia in its purest form — wild, expansive, and deeply connected to nature.

Northern Patagonia is accessed via Balmaceda Airport (BBA), located near Coyhaique, the regional capital of Aysén. Direct flights operate from Santiago (SCL) with a flight time of approximately 2.5 hours.
From Balmaceda Airport, most lodges and towns along the Carretera Austral are reached by private transfer. The road conditions vary seasonally — some sections are paved while others remain gravel — so self-driving requires careful planning, especially in winter months.
The best time to visit is from November through March (southern hemisphere summer), when days are long, weather is milder, and all roads and facilities are fully operational.
